Should the governments support Open Source?

There is an interesting discussion going on in the industry circles, should the governments support and adopt open source against microsft technologies. One might have read stories about Indian and Chinese governments interest in promoting open source technologies in their offices against microsoft and microsoft lobbying hard to get them into microsoft and even signing agreements with several governments and academics.

This indicates the public interest in adopting to open source and also growing feeling within Microsoft about the threat of open source technologies. As the public adopt more and more, open source is going to thrive and provide the same freedom as we have in news, media and speech.

Open source will penetrate 80% of enterprise software

Gartner says: "By 2012, 80 per cent of all commercial software will include elements of open source technology. Many open source technologies are mature, stable, and well supported. They provide significant opportunities for vendors and users to lower their total cost of ownership and increase returns on investment. Ignoring this will put companies at a serious competitive disadvantage. Embedded open-source strategies will become the minimal level of investment that most large software vendors will find necessary to maintain competitive advantages during the next five years."

Over the last few weeks meeting with several colleges and clients around Bangalore, I am astonished at how passionate and exciting the people are responding to the adoption of open source technologies. The tremendous advantages the open source technologies can bring to Indian IT community, colleges and industries from the clutches of proprietary software vendors is vast. Many business, industry and academic pundits are beginning to believe the value proposition of the open source technologies and business solutions and their maturity.

Are Open source technologies suitable for SaaS?

Software-as-a-service (SaaS) model is picking up fast for enterprise applications. Google, Yahoo, Microsoft are all deploying applications on this model for greater accessibility from anywhere for enterprise use. The applications can be accessed by any web enabled devices.

Open source technologies are a great fit for writing SaaS applications as they are more evolved for web and also from their inherent source code visibility unlike C or C++. This makes open source technologies friendly for writing SaaS applications.

SaaS market is growing fast and more and more companies are jumping on this bandwagon. It saves upfront infrastructure costs and quick enablement of business processes for the companies.

Some concerns on data security and access still exist.

There are several service providers who are starting to jump into this service.

Notably an offshore software vendor Aghreni Technologies http://www.aghreni.com is trying to offer its deep expertise to companies who are trying to build their applications on SaaS model using open source technologies.

Aghreni has several years of experience in building products on SaaS model.

Are Open source technologies ready for enterprise applications?

It is interesting to note that many biggies like Yahoo, Google and most popular networking sites are using open source technologies like C, C++, perl, php, python, java on linux, apache, MySQL and postgress platforms and have been very successful in coming out of licensed model.

Most of these companies hence are able to thwart the attack by Microsoft, IBM and Oracle who have entrenched themselves on a license based software model.

While monitoring this space, I am finding a couple of outsourcing companies trying to leverage the expertise on open source technologies and offer them to the business which would like to go big on open source. Business are trying to cut down costs, get good support and use readilly avaialble expertise.

One company called Aghreni technologies started a few months back is trying to grab attention. It provides product incubation and services on open source technologies like Java, perl and php. It has an interesting mix of services on open source technologies and trying to promote them in a big way. It has also embarked in creating the talent pool locally through their education services targetted at college students who would like to build their career on open source technologies early in their college.
